What is Ubiquiti network and how it works?

Ubiquiti’s UniFi devices have a variety of devices to choose from, in addition to being more scalable, customizable and more advanced than basic consumer equipment.

A single device is used as a router, modem, switch and wireless access point. All these roles executed by a single device are cheaper, working in situations where the area is smaller and fewer devices are available. However, this may be challenging in larger buildings, on account of there being multiple floors. There will also be more network traffic, something a one-device solution may not have the capacity to handle.

The Ubiquiti UniFi splits these roles into multiple devices, making the network more scalable and fault tolerant. If one of the access points stopped functioning, only that point would require replacement as opposed to replacement of the entire network.

The Ubiquiti UniFi controller is the brains of the operation - it is a piece of software that stores network settings. It can run on nearly any operating system, and is totally free of charge unlike other offerings. The controller can be installed in the cloud, making it easy for network installers to maintain different sites from a single interface.

The UniFi mesh network controller is similar to a designer - you can design your network, while the controller seeks plugged-in devices to facilitate the same. The idea is to configure elements such as DHCP, IP ranges, wireless networks and more. Then, UniFi devices are plugged in, which need to be adopted by the controller. After this, respective settings will be pushed to it.

UniFi Cloud Key & PoE

The Cloud Key, a unique device, is basically a low powered device with a Linux operating system on it, specifically designed for the UniFi controller.

If the controller is required to run all the time without leaving the workstation on, then the Cloud Key is a worthy contender. It is special since it is entirely powered using Power Over Ethernet (PoE). A vast majority of the UniFi range is PoE enabled. PoE enabled devices get network and power over a single cable, saving the hassle of running power and network cables to each device.

A modular system like Ubiquiti UniFi has its set of advantages - it is scalable, stable and is a customizable approach to your network.
