What is WAN Edge Infrastructure?

A WAN Edge Infrastructure is a type of networking technology that connects distributed IT resources. WAN edge infrastructure enables network connectivity from dispersed enterprise locations to resources in private and public data centers, as well as the cloud. Senior networking leaders within an infrastructure and operation organization are typically in charge of acquiring it. Along with traditional routing functionality, WAN edge infrastructure now includes a broader set of network functions such as secure routers, firewalls, SD-WAN, WAN path control, and WAN optimization.

The term "WAN edge" refers to the networking and security infrastructure that connects distributed enterprise locations — such as branch offices and retail stores — to other sites, as well as applications, data, and services delivered from data centers and clouds. It is dedicated hardware such as edge routers, WAN optimization solutions, and security appliances. Within a router-centric model, each one handled its functions for processing and securing enterprise network traffic. Whether those resources are in data centers, public clouds, or delivered as SaaS applications, connectivity is provided by a combination of hardware and software that works together to provide network reliability and security.

Today, network and security decisions are made concurrently and, ideally, solved with the same solution. Simple routing has given way to feature-rich network virtualization and dashboards that abstract complexity, integrate security, and enable everything to operate as an automated managed service. This transformation means that networking solutions must no longer be chosen solely based on speeds and feeds, but must also be evaluated on their ability to meet the specific needs of each customer.

Below are the three reasons for investing in your WAN Edge Infrastructure :

  1. More flexible transport options: It provides businesses with true transport independence. Because the WAN is virtualized, it can use any transport protocol. A dedicated line for access to a central VoIP solution whereas access to virtual conferencing may benefit from a more agile option, such as VPN over a public network.
  2. Application-Aware controls: Intelligent pathway controls allow you to specify which types of traffic you want to send down a specific path. The intelligent pathway controller can then direct traffic to another path if the performance of that path degrades. Policies can be based on a variety of criteria, such as application profiles, IP addresses, and or even the location of a branch office
  3. Single-Touch Provisioning: WAN allows businesses to send unconfigured WAN devices to branches. Once connected to the network, the device will be automatically identified and connected to the central WAN controller, where critical data such as essential updates, network, and security policies will be downloaded.
